It’s been a great week at Google I/O this year. I’m always interested in learning more protips for creating awesome mobile apps. So, the Android Protips 3: Making Apps Work Like Magic was a great session.

The biggest topic of the session was “context isn’t important, it’s critical”. The idea is that depending on the situation, the app should be working in different ways.

This includes location-based services, activity recognition (running, walking, driving, biking).

Examples:
- If the user is driving or running, then they may not need an update to their news feed. But, they may need to update the user’s location more often.
- If the user is still and they turn on their phone, then they may want to see updates to weather or news.
